Why Prescription Refills Take Time
1. Prescription Review
A veterinarian must legally review and approve each refill before it’s dispensed — even for long-term medications. They assess:
-
Whether your pet is due for a recheck exam or lab work
-
If the current dose is still appropriate
-
Any potential interactions with new medications
2. Inventory & Ordering
Not all medications are stocked in large quantities, especially special-order or compounded items. Sometimes we need to order from a supplier, which can add 1–2 days.
3. Pharmacy Workload
Our team balances prescriptions with surgeries, appointments, and emergencies. Refills are completed in the order received, and we require a 2–4 business day turnaround to ensure safety and accuracy.
4. Documentation & Compliance
Regulations require precise tracking, labeling, and record-keeping — especially for controlled substances — adding extra steps to the process.
