When do pets reach senior age?
Furry family members reach milestones much faster than us. Cats, for example, are considered senior age at around 11-years-old and geriatric at approximately 14-years-old. There is a bit more nuance when it comes to our canine friends depending on their breed and size. Small dogs reach senior status at around 11-years-old, medium-sized dogs at roughly 10 years, while the larger breeds are seen as seniors at the 8-year mark.
How should I take care of my senior pet?
The most important thing you can do for your pet is bring them to our veterinary team regularly for full health exams at least once every 6 months. When it comes to senior pets, you need to be on your “A-game” to ensure they get regular exercise, have an age-appropriate diet, healthy teeth, are updated on their parasite protection and vaccines, and that they receive proper socialization with you, other people and other animals. All of these factors will be explained to you by your veterinarian during a consultation. The main thing to remember is that senior pets need extra love and attention.
